Rowan Animal Clinic
2012
In 2012, after their existing practice was destroyed in a tragic fire, Dr. Greg Lowe with Rowan Animal Clinic contacted Roger Layman to design their new state of the art facility. The doctors at Rowan Animal Clinic wanted to reinforce the rural nature of their growing animal practice while emphasizing the high technology at the core of modern veterinary medicine. This project was the recipient of the DVM 360 Merit Award in 2014.
Pet owners in the rural town of Salisbury, NC, can't miss the red-barn veterinary hospital that is Rowan Animal Clinic. Dr. R.B. Lowe calls it a "Modern interpretation of a vernacular barn found in the region." "Our architect told us to think of where our clients would feel most comfortable," he says, "For us, it's in a barn setting." The brick exterior with a silo and sunshade delineate the small animal portion of the practice. Behind, a red barn welcomes large animal clients with a large animal treatment area for horses, dairy and exotic animals. A large barn door allows trailers to pull through easily. The hospital includes 8 exam rooms, a large treatment area with surgery suite, boarding kennel for 35 animals and offices for 5 doctors.
